New Zealand
If you have only tried south island NZ wines (Marlborough and Nelson), get your booty to your local wine shop or wine warehouse and seek out north island wines. I can't promote these enough! In America, we pretty much get large producer sauvignon blancs at our restaurants and in our stores. NZ produces more than that, their pinot noirs and syrahs can really kick butt! The north island climate, terroir, etc makes a very different sauvignon blanc, and I even prefer those to south island SBs--north island SBs don't have that "cat's pee on a gooseberry bush" tang. Give Babich a try (their vineyards are located near Auckland, the north part of the north island) for a new NZ SB. Babich is pretty widely available, and they make a great Syrah. One thing my husband and I have noticed is that these wines love to breathe, so give them a couple of hours, even a day to open up if you can. You'll get a much different mouthful.
